Walk for nature

Mai Po is a living kaleidoscope of wildlife apart from birds. And autumn is the perfect season to discover this wonderful natural reserve with family and friends.

Find out by joining “Walk for Nature”, that to be held on 2 and 3 November at Mai Po Nature Reserve.

Along the five-kilometre route, you will experience Mai Po’s distinctive habitats, including the gei wai  (traditional shrimp ponds), boardwalk, natural wildlife habitats, as well as bird hides. You may even get the chance to meet our hardworking resident, the water buffalo.

The event, organized by WWF Hong Kong, will also feature game booths and environmental workshops that highlight the importance of safeguarding our environment and wildlife.

Recognised as a “Wetland of International Importance” under the Ramsar Convention in 1995, Mai Po Nature Reserve has been drawing observers since the 1940s and has become known as a bird paradise, with a total of 400 bird species recorded inside the Mai Po Inner Deep Bay wetlands, accounting for 75 per cent of the known bird species in Hong Kong.

Among them are 35 species that are classified as worldwide endangered species. Walking along the set route around the reserve, participants not only enjoy the beautiful scenery, they will also learn about the importance of conservation and how to develop a sustainable lifestyle by participating in a series of interactive challenges set up at various check points.

While Mai Po Nature Reserve is famous for bird-watching, the unique wetland habitats attract a rich biodiversity within the reserve, which is why this year’s theme is “Birds & Beyond”. At “Walk for Nature”, participants can glimpse some of the wetland’s nocturnal inhabitants, including bent-winged fireflies, Eurasian otters and the small leopard cat.

Through activities held along the walking route, participants learn about the importance of preserving biodiversity and conserving Hong Kong’s natural environment.
